Snowy Owl

The snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) is a large, white owl of the true owl family. Snowy owls are native to Arctic regions in North America and the Palearctic. Males are almost all white, while females have more flecks of black plumage. Juvenile snowy owls have black feathers until they turn white. The snowy owl is a ground nester that primarily hunts rodents and waterfowl, and opportunistically eats carrion (the decaying flesh of dead animals and humans). Most owls sleep during the day and hunt at night, but the snowy owl is active during the day, especially in the summertime.

Appearances[]

Snowy owls appear in several episodes.

The first episode to show a snowy owl was "Who's in the Hole?". When Chris tried to enter Animal Junction through a hole in the wall but got stuck, a female snowy owl and a bald eagle watched as Martin pulled him out. She was also seen after the Kratt Brothers were explaining how an alpine horn works and while they say that Zoboomafoo will hear it wherever he is before using it to call for him.

A snowy owl also appeared in "Tracks".

Another snowy owl appeared in "Ears Hear". It was among the animals that the Kratts heard making noise through their Super Ear Sensors (the owl was the 3rd animal heard between a camel and a capuchin monkey).

A female snowy owl was also shown in "The Four F's".

A male snowy owl delivered Amy's message in "Hot and Cold". Chris describes how the owl's whole body is covered with feathers; only his eyes, beak, and talons are showing. Martin adds that all those feathers keep him warm in the snow.
